How to Prepare for Your Upcoming Job Relocation

Some business professionals may become instantly stressed when their company tells them that they have to relocate for their job. However, although it may be a big change, with proper planning and a bit of research, you can make the transition as easy as possible. As a professional realtor, Kerri Jonikas has made a living out of helping people feel comfortable in their new homes, so she has some great tips for how to make your relocation a stress-free experience.

Look at Potential Neighborhoods

If you are married and you have kids then you will need to think about them as you plan your relocation, especially when it comes to the town where you plan to live. During the months leading up to your relocation, start researching potential neighborhoods. You should look at several factors during your research, including crime statistics and the quality of the school districts in the area. You can find out great information about potential schools from the department of education, or by calling the school itself. It is highly recommended you visit the schools as well before making a decision. Most schools offer tours during the day when school is in session.

It is also a good idea to look at the proximity between your potential home and the place where you work. You don’t want to have an overly long commute so try to find a home within a 15-mile radius. If you can’t live that close then consider looking into public transportation options so you don’t have to put a lot of miles on your car.

Preparing for the Move

Once you have secured a new home, you will need to start thinking about how you will pack up all of your belongings and get them to your new city. This is a good time to clear any unnecessary clutter from your home so you aren’t shipping items that you don’t need. You can make a major difference in your closets by getting rid of any clothes that you haven’t worn in the last year. You can donate what you no longer need to a charity organization and get a tax write-off.

If you have a large home then it is a good idea to hire movers to help you through the process. A good moving company will help you to pack up your existing property, transport your belongings to your new city, and help you unpack when you get there. Make sure to thoroughly research moving companies online by looking at customer reviews and getting price quotes.

Self-Care

While there will be a lot of moving parts involved, it is important that you do not stress out or you won’t do your family any good. Self-care is a priority. Even though you have a lot to do, you’ll still want to get your eight hours of sleep so you can wake up feeling refreshed and ready to make important decisions. It is also essential to eat a healthy diet now and in the future so you can stay in great shape during the move.

Moving Your Own Business

In the case that you are self-employed or you are relocating a business that you own, you will need to make extra preparations. For starters, you’ll want to look at the taxes in the new area and you’ll want to verify that there are potential customers in the new city that fit your demographic.

It may also be necessary to register your business in the new state. If you have a limited liability company, then you will need to research the regulations at your destination to ensure that you are staying compliant. To take some of the stress off of your shoulders, consider hiring an Illinois formation service that can take care of the legalities so you can focus on moving your family.

As you can see, there is a lot that goes into relocating for work, but if you take it one step at a time, then you can make it work. If you are looking to buy a property during the process, then Kerri Jonikas can help. Call her at 708-268-0462.
